Cherry Blossoms
Cherry blossoms, or sakura, hold a special place in Tokyo’s cultural history. The practice of hanami, or flower viewing, originated in the Nara period(around the 8th century)―when plum trees imported from China were admired―and cherry blossoms took over during the Heian period(9th-12th centuries). Hanami became widely popular among common people during the Edo period(17th-19th centuries), especially in Tokyo. People gathered in parks and along rivers to appreciate the fleeting beauty of the blossoms. Sakura symbolize renewal, impermanence, and the changing of seasons—concepts deeply embedded in Japanese aesthetics. Even today, the arrival of cherry blossoms marks one of the most celebrated moments of the year.
Mt. Fuji
Although located outside the city, Mt. Fuji has long shaped Tokyo’s cultural imagination. The mountain features prominently in Edo‑period woodblock prints, including the works of Hokusai and Hiroshige, many of which were created in or around Edo. Mt. Fuji has been revered as a sacred mountain for centuries, inspiring spiritual reflection, artistic creation, and national symbolism. Its presence on the horizon continues to connect Tokyo to a broader cultural and natural heritage. Mt. Fuji has long captivated the hearts of the Japanese people.
